Special to the News
Xavier Moon recently left Coosa County to continue his professional basketball career, but before he departed for Canada a ceremony was held at the Belyeu Gymnasium to retire his #22 Central High School jersey during a recent home basketball game.
Xavier graduated from Central High School in 2013. Some highlights from his high school career were playing in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game, leading the state in scoring with an average of 35 points per game his senior year and signing his letter of intent to play college basketball with Northwest Florida State College.
Moon attributes his high school success to Alabama High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame Coach Joe N. Belyeu, who he played for from 2010-2013.
After high school, Moon would also go on to earn a degree from and play basketball for Morehead State University in Kentucky.
In his professional career, Moon was a three-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Canadian Elite Basketball League in which he won back-to-back championships. In addition, the MVP trophy is now named in his honor, The Xavier Moon Award.
Another highlight of his professional career was playing in his first NBA game the day after Christmas in 2021 for the Los Angeles Clippers. Moon also played professionally in Israel, France and Russia.
Moon added, “Success never rewards the wrong person. Be a student of your craft and try to get as close to perfect as you can. Never let anybody tell you what you can’t do.”
Moon serves as a role model for our students, demonstrating through clean living and self-discipline, no matter where you come from, you can achieve success.
We will continue to follow Xavier’s success as he plays for the Winnipeg Sea Bears, returning to the Canadian Elite Basketball League in which he is a legend.
