ALDOT is reaching a significant milestone in its ongoing project to widen U.S. Highway 280 by setting the first girders for the new Pumphouse Road Bridge.
This work requires a total closure of traffic at the juncture for crews to safely install the 100-foot beams across the width of the highway.
Beginning at 11 p.m. on Friday, November 14,, ALDOT is closing all Highway 280 lanes at Pumphouse Road.
Eastbound lanes will remain shut down through the morning of Monday, November 17. Westbound lanes will reopen each morning at 5 a.m. before closing again at 11 p.m.
All Highway 280 lanes at Pumphouse Road should be reopened by 6 a.m. on Monday, November 17.
The current Pumphouse Road Bridge, its eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp will remain open during this work.
Major delays are expected, and ALDOT encourages travelers to begin planning alternate paths through this corridor now.
We recommend motorists use Lakeshore Parkway to I-65 to I-459 to Highway 280 as a main detour heading east and the reverse route order for westbound trips.
Following next week’s crucial night-time girder installation, most of the Pumphouse Road Bridge replacement work will take place during the day as promised.
There will be additional weekend road closures to complete the phased bridge construction in the future.
ALDOT wants to thank the public for their patience during this widening project which will greatly increase Highway 280 capacity when complete in Fall 2026.
