Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Who else got some grass seed out last weekend to be watered by much needed rain? Just me? I overseeded the whole lawn in hopes that this rain will help it sprout.
I will have to overseed again in the spring, but with geese and a horse they will eat much of it. The geese love the young tender shoots, and the horse likes taller, but I need to keep her off the lawn and in the back pasture.
The new quilting group is meeting every Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jenny’s General Store. The group is working on a log cabin pattern, which is great for every level of experience. Each lady is purchasing their own material; most are buying pre-cut kits to do 12 log cabin squares.
The group discussed options for making a bigger quilt by purchasing multiple kits, or complementary fabric to add in and create a new overall design of the quilt or add multiple borders.
Next meeting on November 3, sewing of the first blocks will begin. If you would like to join us, affordable kits can be found at Jordanfabrics.com; look for pre-cut log cabin quilt kit. Or bring your own fabric; I have cutting tools. I have a few extra sewing machines; however, if you have one, please bring it with you.
Rebel Homesteaders of Elmore/Coosa counties are hosting a canning class; I believe it is water bath canning tomatoes. November 14 is the proposed date, and when the time is confirmed I will be sharing that here. Class will be held at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Hall Lodge building on Highway 9 in downtown Equality.
Please continue to support ongoing activities such as by Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale, held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Highway 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9. Also, Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every first and third Friday starting at 10 a.m.
First Saturday is tomorrow, November 1. Please join in supporting our local volunteer fire department. Baked goods can be donated for the bake sale, and baked goods can be purchased from the bake sale. Donations for breakfast and/or lunch are welcome, and browse the rummage sale while socializing with your neighbors from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., all while supporting our Equality Volunteer Fire Department.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
