Some people make light of it, while others don’t believe it exists.
But the Bible refers to Hell as a real place.
Considering it is one of either two locations people go following death (it is either Heaven or Hell), you’d think people would be more knowledgeable about it.
What some people perhaps don’t know is that Hell will eventually give up its dead and ultimately be cast into the lake of fire. That’s what the final book of the Bible – Revelation – reveals to us.
“And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:13-15
The lake of fire is an eternal abode for the lost. The Devil and his fallen angels will dwell there forever, along with the beast (antichrist) and false prophet, and all those who reject God’s salvation.
It is an everlasting torment – one which is constant with no way of escape.
When Jesus returns to the Earth, the beast and false prophet will be taken and cast into that eternal abode.
“And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.” – Revelation 19:20
The Devil will eventually be cast into the same fiery abode following Jesus’ 1,000-year rule on Earth. Notice that though slightly more than 1,000 years have passed since the beast and false prophet were cast alive into the lake of fire, those two are still present in that fiery location when the Devil is cast in.
That refutes the false teaching of an annihilation or destruction when one enters into that eternal abode. Those who go there will be there forever.
“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” – Revelation 20:10
The sheep and goats referred to in Matthew 25 also reveal for whom the lake of fire was actually created.
“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” – Matthew 25:41.
The Bible also has a lot to say about Hell, including descriptions that would make anyone want to avoid it. Some feel as if Hell is a place to live it up with their friends. It is quite the opposite.
The account of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16 reveals that Hell is a place of torment. There will be burning and no access to water.
The rich man rejected God and eventually “died, and was buried.”
“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments…” – Luke 16:23
The rich man desired that Lazarus would merely dip the tip of his finger in water to cool his tongue, because he was tormented in the flame.
That request could not occur.
Hell is no laughing matter. It is real. Many are plunging into that burning place daily.
“Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure…” – Isaiah 5:14
Another description of Hell occurs in Mark 9, which states that it is definitely a location that should be avoided at all costs.
“And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.” – Mark 9:43,44
We deserve eternal separation from God because of our disobedience to Him. But God provided a way to save our souls from everlasting burning and damnation.
It cost Jesus His very lifeblood to provide an escape route. God wants all to come to Him and avoid eternity lost.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16
