Equality & Nixburg News

Fall weather was here, then it was not; at least at night the temperature is cooler. But with cooler weather comes predators, and we lost a guinea fowl and many eggs this past week.
We are going to introduce some livestock guardian dogs (LGD) to the homestead to help with this ongoing predator issue we have been dealing with. They are already trained, a couple of girls who are in danger of an unhappy neighbor where they currently are residing.
So, we have met with them and will see how they work out with our homestead, and we are hoping it is a good opportunity for both us and dogs. They keep the predators away and have a happy life on our farm, which would be a win-win for us both, well all four of us, two humans and two dogs.
If it does work out I am seriously thinking of adding a few sheep in the borrowed pasture next door. Was hesitant to do so because of the coyote trail behind our property, but LGDs should be enough to protect all our livestock from the coyotes.
I am remiss in not informing you of Coosa Fancy’s fall CSA. CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.”
This system offers customers the opportunity to support their local farms and producers via an initial buy-in price, which is then returned through weekly shares of fresh produce. This helps the farm by providing the initial capital needed for operation costs.
The fall CSA begins tomorrow, September 20, and goes for 10 weeks. It is not too late to join up, and they offer farm pickup from Thursday through Saturday of each week.
Check out their website for more details at https://coosa-fancy.com/shop/p/farm-pickup-csa-spring-2025 or call 205-552-4592.
Please continue to support ongoing activities such as by Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale, held most Saturdays starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9.
Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg hosts Rummikub at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex every first and third Friday starting at 10 a.m.
This month’s Neighborhood Watch meeting is on the fourth Thursday, September 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please plan on joining for safety information, community fellowship, and a great meal that Dave Dial provides for the community, that you can donate toward if you like.
Save the date for the last Saturday in October. EVFD Bingo will return 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Lots of fun and prizes with proceeds supporting our wonderful volunteer fire department.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
