Equality & Nixburg News
Jennifer Williamson
What is going on in Nixburg? Have you stopped by Kendrick Memorial Baptist Church’s yard sale?
They will be holding the yard sale tomorrow, August 23, starting at 8 a.m. Address is 5152 Ala. Hwy. 9 in case you haven’t noticed it driving on Highway 9.
They have the yard sale about every weekend as long as there is no bad weather, so stop in and check out what treasures they might have. All proceeds go to support the church.
Elaine Rutledge of Nixburg loves to play Rummikub. How do I know? A couple of years ago she invited me to an evening of fun with her neighbors and friends playing Rummikub.
At the time I was without a vehicle, and life was busy and chaotic, and I never got back with her about joining once I did get a vehicle. However, she has not stopped playing and now organizes events at the Alexander City Senior Center in the Sportplex.
They play every first and third Friday, and if there is a fifth Friday, they play then, also. Game time is usually from 10 until about 2 p.m., ending when someone has to leave. Snacks are always welcome; the center has bottled water, and someone usually brings sandwiches or orders pizza since game plays through the lunch hour.
Rummikub is a tile-based game similar to the card game Rummy, widely praised for its blend of strategy and luck, making it a fun game. If you are not familiar with the game Elaine is happy to play with you until you are comfortable on your own.
If you are looking for some wholesome fun and fellowship with other seniors please join in during one of their regular game times.
In Equality I am still praying for good neighbors, both in the business district, as well as residential areas. I still believe that Equality, Ala., is not just a dot on the map, but a precious community with Southern small-town charm and hospitality with no room for profiteers and behavior that takes away from our charming connected community.
Just a reminder of local community events, this month’s Neighborhood Watch meeting is on the fourth Thursday, August 28, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please plan on joining for safety information and community fellowship.
First Saturday Equality Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser is coming up in two weeks on September 6. Please consider joining. Baked goods can be donated for the bake sale, and baked goods can be purchased from the bake sale.
Donations are accepted for breakfast and/or lunch, and you can browse the rummage sale while socializing with your neighbors from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., all while supporting our Equality Volunteer Fire Department.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
