On Saturday, July 19, at approximately 11:15 a.m., special agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched a homicide investigation at the request of the Alexander City Police Department.
ALEA special agents responded to the 4000 block of Washington Street in Alexander City, within Tallapoosa County, to a home invasion robbery where the victim, 32-year-old Toyias Gopher of
Alexander City, was found fatally wounded by gunfire.
Steven Abercrombie, 22, of Alexander City, was arrested in connection with the homicide and
officially charged with capital murder. Abercrombie was booked into the Tallapoosa County
Jail.
According to reports, a second arrest was made Tuesday afternoon in connection with the case when 22-year-old Joshua Travis Etchison was also arrested and charged with capital murder.
Abercrombie and Etchison have also been charged with third-degree burglary and second-degree theft.
ALEA would like to thank the Alexander City Police Department; the Montgomery Police
Department; the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Office; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms,
and Explosives (ATF) Montgomery Office; and the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for their
assistance.
Nothing further is available as the investigation remains ongoing. Once complete, the findings
will be turned over to Alabama Attorney General’s Office.
