Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
Summer heat and daily rains, and the only things growing are invasive weeds and grass. My garden gave me one zucchini and two yellow squash, and then it was consumed with water and weeds. I did see some fennel growing, but haven’t gotten in there to cut back the weeds since it rains every evening and every day I have off.
I started another structure to house our young turkeys after losing so many to neighbor’s dogs and other predators over the past year. Like our other birds they are being trained to free range during the day and get put up at night.
With all this rain I am having some challenges with water erosion and rain collecting in areas I don’t need it collecting in, but I’m making some progress. However, this holiday weekend I plan on working all indoors because I really want to get another room finished. I am getting too old to be having so many projects and just need things finished so I can just maintain and not be building all the time.
Jenny’s General has had an upturn in business as people are finding out about all the bulk herbs available, both culinary and apothecary. I am now thinking of painting the front of the store, perhaps a muted red with brown trim to give it a more rustic warm look. The other alternative is going completely different, light blue with white trim, but that seems very modern to me, and I am more with the vintage and country aesthetics.
I still need to address the roof, which will likely just be galvanized metal which will look nice over the red and brown building. Very “country general store” in my opinion.
We still need the greenhouse to be taken down; the family that wanted it never came and got it. We have another family interested so I will be reaching out to give them an opportunity to come take it down and move it out. This will really open up the area around the store, perhaps be some much needed off-the-road parking.
The Equality Volunteer Fire Department is holding its first Saturday monthly fundraiser tomorrow, Saturday, July 5. Being a holiday weekend, I hope there is lots of support in both donations and purchases. It starts at 8 a.m. with breakfast and bake sale, and lunch starts serving at 11 a.m. Rummage sale throughout the day until 1 p.m.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
