Bridging the Divide

We are celebrating America’s birthday this weekend. For many Americans that means spending time with family, firing up the grill and lighting up the sky with fireworks. For other Americans, it means reflecting on our nation’s history, remembering time served in our military, or thinking of loved ones who are currently serving.
Independence Day, observed on July 4, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1776. This document declared the independence of the 13 colonies from Great Britain and established the United States of America. Although the vote for independence occurred on July 2, the formal adoption of the Declaration on July 4 established it as the date for celebrating American independence.
Historical Significance:
Break from British Rule: The Declaration of Independence marked the colonies’ official separation from British rule.
Declaration of Rights: The document emphasized the principle that “all men are created equal” and outlined citizens’ “unalienable rights” to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
Symbol of Patriotism: Independence Day is a significant national holiday and a symbol of patriotism.
Traditional Celebrations:
Fireworks: The tradition of July 4 fireworks began in Philadelphia in 1777.
Parades and Concerts: Parades, concerts and other public events are common celebrations today.
Family Gatherings and Barbecues: Family gatherings and barbecues are very popular.
As mentioned, the resolution for independence was approved on July 2, while the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted on July 4. Although the Declaration stated that “all men are created equal,” the concept of equality has not always been consistently applied throughout American history. July 4 serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of these ideals.
American freedom, while celebrated for its promotion of individual liberty and opportunity, also presents challenges and potential drawbacks.
Key advantages include the ability to pursue personal goals, express oneself freely and participate in a democratic society. However, these freedoms can also lead to inequality, social divisions and challenges in maintaining a cohesive society.
Today, Independence Day is a time for reflection on the sacrifices made to secure these freedoms, as well as a celebration of the nation’s founding principles. It’s a day to appreciate the liberties Americans enjoy and to consider the ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union.
To me, the Fourth of July is a celebration of everything that America is – independence, freedom, families, and service! I hope you will join me and my family as we give thanks to the service men and women who sacrificed everything to allow us to continue to be the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave!
