In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
I’m back! Since the last time I wrote my column I have been on two trips of a lifetime – one to Germany with my travel buddy Emily Campbell and one out west with my brother and sister from other mothers, Ran and Terry Wilson!
Germany was another Beaches of Normandy Tour to sites from World War II that covered the end of the war. The trip out west was to see six national parks and many other monuments and memorials here in our great United States. We have the most beautiful country in the world!
Many different things have happened while I’ve been gone – some good, some bad and some just plain ugly. Protests all over the country supporting illegal immigrants; terrorists; anti-gay, anti-Israel, anti-women groups; waving foreign flags while burning and stepping on our beautiful American flag. Most of these protesters don’t even know what they are protesting – they are getting paid to be there just to create chaos.
Then, our president held a parade to honor the Army’s 250th birthday (one year older than our country!) but, while many of us were so proud and excited to see our men and women in uniform showing off our military strength, others were complaining about “a king.” We split from monarchy in 1776, and the only real King we still serve is our Lord Jesus, the “King of Kings.”
I was so glad to read Probate Judge Rick Dean’s column last week. We have many retired and former veterans here in Coosa County, and their patriotism for our country is wonderful. I’m not going to start naming them because there are too many, and I’d end up leaving someone out – just know they are here!
Compared to many countries overseas, our United States of America is still a child. I saw areas in Germany that go back into the 6th and 7th centuries and are still standing. We have come a long way in our history from groups escaping religious restraints to others escaping from the slavery that brought them here in the first place. We have seen women and minorities gain the rights to vote, to speak, to marry, and to have recognition on their own merits.
But I am seeing a reversal in some of the areas where we had advanced so far – women’s rights especially are under attack in the areas of women’s sports that “feminists” fought so hard for in the 60s and 70s. Women fought hard to have a voice, but now the majority of women are quietly supporting the advancement of transgender, non-binary, bi-gender, and unknown genders.
With the celebration of our 250th birthday next year it is time for Americans to join arms and realize how lucky we are to live in this great country of ours. Yes, we still have problems and issues. But look at the millions of people who have risked their lives and the lives of their families to come here – legally and illegally.
Those who came legally waited patiently in line, filled out forms, took tests, and paid a large sum of money to be accepted into America. Those who came illegally paid dearly, also – but to “coyotes” who would mistreat them, rape them, separate them from their families, and other horrible experiences just to come to America and then have to hide.
Those who came legally have mainly joined in the way of life we have here – learning English, working and blending into our melting pot. But the others just don’t seem to want the “good life” they supposedly came here for. They are here living off our taxes, maintaining their language and joining into the communities of their ethnic groups. They prefer the more “tossed salad” idea of life.
We need to do away with the titles of African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Irish-Americans, Polish-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Cuban-Americans, and all the other hyphenated Americans. Our ancestors who came here first came to become Americans – so let’s get it done!
There have been so many other things in the news, but I’m not about to start in on any of them right now. I am still in the process of moving from wonderful Equality to wonderful Rockford, and I just don’t have time to worry about all those other things! God is in charge and will take care of it in His own way. But do start thinking about how you are going to celebrate our Independence Day of the Fourth of July!
