The J. D. Thompson High School Alumni Association members had planned a full day of fun events for May 17, which included the Fun Run Walk-a-Thon. Although rain was not in the plan, it showed up.
To quote Alumni Association Vice President Sheryl Borden, “God did it for us this May Day! Rain was on the outside, but we had so much fun on the inside.”
Coach Doris Gamble had her teacher and coach hats on. There was no sitting around, as everyone was encouraged to participate in a fun run and some exercise routines to help keep our bodies in shape. Gamble is always prepared.
The raindrops did not stop Calvin Kelly, our produce vendor, from selling his watermelons, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and plums. He always parks in a good spot, and his fruits and vegetables are the best.
Jermaine Maxwell, our game show host, drafted all his participants to play several games that were challenging and fun. The games helped with our cognitive thinking, and he also gave prizes.
The Grove Concession was open for business selling its famous fried fish, grilled hot dogs, sodas, and water, which was really good after the fun run and the games.
This fundraising event included activities for all age groups. There was a raffle with prizes, and we cannot forget Bingo, one of our favorite games. The participants look forward to Willie Zeigler calling the numbers and handing out prizes.
The final event for the day was The Gospel Hour of Power, coordinated by Sheryl Borden. The gospel music performed from the guest was a hit. If you were not there you really missed some powerful performances.
President Joetta Maxwell and the J. D. Thompson High School Alumni Association members would like to thank all the churches that participated, as well as the businesses and individuals that supported the event with donations. We want to say a special thank you to our faithful volunteers and everyone that came out on a rainy day – you brought the sunshine to the inside.
