Bridging the Divide
Chuck Bradley
It’s highly probable that gambling will be a significant issue in the 2026 Alabama governor’s race, given its history as a contentious and frequently debated topic in state politics. It is a popular topic among voters, and the possibility exists for it to influence the governor’s election in 2026.
Here’s a rundown of why I think gambling is a potentially significant issue, and why I think it might not be.
Gambling might be an issue because, gambling, particularly a state lottery, has consistently polled with strong support among Alabamians.
Legalizing and regulating gambling could generate substantial revenue for the state, potentially addressing budget needs or funding specific programs.
Voter interest among a significant group of Alabamians support allowing voters to decide on a gambling proposal. This suggests the issue has the potential to motivate voters.
Legalized gambling, including a lottery, could generate substantial revenue for the state, which is a major consideration for voters and candidates alike.
Candidates could differentiate themselves by taking strong stances for or against expanded gambling, potentially appealing to specific voter bases.
Gambling might not be a major issue because Alabama has a long history of failed attempts to pass comprehensive gambling legislation.
Disagreements persist over the types of gambling to be allowed (lottery, casinos, sports betting), where casinos should be located and how revenue should be allocated.
Despite its popularity, disagreements as previously mentioned could cause gambling not to be the type of issue that significantly impacts how people vote, meaning it is not a vote-motivating issue according to some political analysts and Artificial Intelligence.
In recent elections “culture war” issues have often dominated the conversation, and gambling might not break through that in 2026.
Currently there is a lack of groundswell. There isn’t a strong public movement actively pushing for gambling legislation, suggesting it may not be a top priority for many voters.
The governor’s limited role in gambling legislation is restricted, as it requires a constitutional amendment and thus ultimately a voter decision. The possibility of a citizen-initiated ballot measure on gambling could keep the issue alive and force candidates to address it.
Should this happen, candidates will likely face pressure to take a clear stance on gambling. The issue could become a wedge issue, potentially dividing voters and candidates along party lines or philosophical differences.
Powerful interest groups, both for and against gambling expansion, are likely to be active in the race, potentially influencing campaign messaging and fundraising.
The deeply rooted debate surrounding gambling in Alabama, coupled with its potential economic impact and the political implications, strongly suggests it will be a prominent issue in the 2026 governor’s race. Candidates’ positions on gambling are likely to be scrutinized by voters and interest groups alike.
While gambling is a popular topic with Alabamians and has potential revenue implications, it’s not guaranteed to be a major issue in the 2026 governor’s race. The issue’s importance will likely depend on the candidates’ stances, the broader political climate and how voters prioritize it alongside other concerns.
