Richville Rundown
Sheila Ward
Memorial Day is this Monday, May 26. It is a federal holiday to honor and mourn the U. S. military personnel who died in service during the line of duty.
It has been observed since 1868, known then as Decoration Day following the end of the Civil War. In 1968, Congress changed its observance to the last Monday in May, with the name “Memorial Day” being standardized in 1971. Another day of honoring our military is in November on Veterans Day, which honors all those who have served our country.
Don’t forget Rockford Baptist Church, 9575 U.S. Highway 231, will host a free movie night tonight, May 23, at 6 p.m. There will be popcorn, hot food, chips, and more, including door prizes. The movie is “God’s not Dead.” Everyone is invited, so make plans to attend.
School is out! Congratulations to all the seniors and blessings on your plans for the future. To all the undergraduates, congratulations, also, on finishing another year.
The Richville Volunteer Fire Department’s Boston Butts will be ready for pickup tomorrow, May 24, from 7 to 9 a.m. Also, the Neighborhood Watch will be selling baked goods again that morning. Even if you didn’t order a Boston Butt come out and buy a baked good for Memorial Day!
The next Bingo will be on June 14 at 6:30 p.m. so mark your calendars and plan to attend.
Providence Baptist Church will have homecoming on June 1. There is a correction of time; service will begin at 10 a.m. instead of 10:30. Special music provided by Promised Land, and Bro. Jeff Hardy will bring the message, followed by a fellowship meal. Everyone is invited.
Don’t forget to make plans to attend the Rockford Spring Fling at the Park next Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They will have vendors, food trucks, music, and inflatable water slide for the kids. It will be located around Jackson Street and Nixburg Road at the Rockford Playground.
The Coosa County Historical Society is seeking donations to purchase the necessary equipment to digitize all our records, newsletters, etc. Donations may be mailed to Coosa County Historical Society; P.O. Box 5; Rockford, AL 35136. All donations are tax deductible.
This week my Bible verse is about sacrifice. Hebrews 13:16 reads, “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”
While Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice, men and women offer their lives each day in service to defend our country. Let us remember those who gave their lives defending us in the line of duty. So, this Memorial Day weekend, don’t forget it’s not just about BBQs and get-togethers, but a remembrance of the sacrifice that has been made to give us the liberty to enjoy the freedoms we have.
This verse also applies to us in our Christian life to do good to others.
Be in prayer for all those that are sick in our community. But also, think about giving someone a call just to say hello; it will make a difference in their day. Many times, when we go out to spread blessings to others, it’s us that gets the blessing.
