It is several days after Resurrection Sunday now, and we’re still rejoicing in Jesus’ victory over death.
We look back on that day with hope and look forward to the second resurrection – when Jesus returns for His saints.
His second coming could not occur without Him first being resurrected more than 2,000 years ago.
Jesus will descend, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Those saints that are alive and remain here on the earth – His church – will then meet them in the clouds.
At some point in the future, Jesus will return for His bride. She’ll be holy and ready to meet Him in the air. He’ll present her – the church – to Himself, according to the Bible.
Ephesians 5:25-27 describes the church’s condition at the time of his return.
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
Jesus’ blood was shed at Calvary to redeem us, and also to purchase His church, which is His body.
Acts 20:28 states, “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
The purchase price for the church was Jesus’ blood. Prior to His return, He will sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by his word.
He’ll return for a holy bride who is ready to meet Him.
“Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” – Revelation 19:7-8.
It is the epitome of a true love story. Jesus gave Himself for His church. And the church will be completely obedient to Jesus out of great love for Him. She’ll follow His Word.
“Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.” (Ephesians 5:24)
At present, his wife is in the preparatory stage of “making herself ready.”
Think of a bride preparing for the big wedding day. So much planning and details are required prior to the big event.
The bride has to be just so. No doubt, she will be presentable as she walks down the aisle to her groom.
Imagine how the first man, Adam, felt when God presented the woman (Eve) to him. The man was extremely impressed with his help meet, who God created from one of his own ribs (bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh).
Jesus Christ will be enthralled with His bride, and vice versa.
“For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
