The Coosa County Association of Scenic Waterways met last Wednesday, with a focus on planning for this year’s Hatchet Creek float, called the Creek Run Festival.
The association’s Board of Directors decided to set May 17 as the date for this year’s float. Like the previous two years, it will be a one-day float with participants putting in at Kings Bridge outside of Rockford and taking out at Double Bridges in the Richville area.
The Board also set the registration fee to be the same as last year, meaning the registration fee for the Creek Run Festival only is $30, or interested participants can pay a $50 registration fee to include the float fee and membership with the CCASW.
Float participants will receive a 2025 Creek Run Festival T-shirt, floating sunglass holder, 20-liter dry bag, and cell phone holder. All participants will also be entered into a giveaway for the chance to win a 24-can RTIC cooler.
Food will once again be provided with barbecue sandwiches from Triple R Cafe, as well as snacks being available.
The Board also approved getting two portable restrooms and one wash station to set up at the take-out spot.
Coosa County EMS Director Hollie Osbourn said that she would help organize safety paddlers for this year’s float.
During discussion and planning, Board Member Amanda Kimsey said that she would check with First Community Bank, Alabama One, Central Alabama Electric Cooperative, and Alabama Power for donations or sponsorships for this year’s event.
Board Member Matthew Reams said that he would set up a registration link for those wishing to register online to participate in the float.
Also during the meeting, nominations were opened for Board president, as is done annually. Reams nominated Sheldon Hutcherson to once again serve as president, and with no other nominations made, this was unanimously approved.
Additionally, Reams asked about the possibility of installing an information kiosk for Hatchet Creek and floaters, which would include information about checking the water flow and time frames for floating the creek.
Reams said that he would be willing to help and do the work to build and install such a kiosk. There was discussion of liability concerns, with it being stated that if the kiosk has the association’s name on it and is a liability, then it would not go forward.
After discussion, the Board agreed to look into more information and the possibility of establishing the information kiosk.
Anyone interested in participating in the Creek Run Festival May 17 or who would like to be a sponsor for the float can email coosawaterways@yahoo.com for more information.
