Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
I have never had so many up in my business like I have had in Coosa County being as free as it is.
I have homeowners’ insurance who wanted pictures of all sides of the house and property and now are wanting me to paint my house, put up handrails on a back porch we rarely use, fix a chimney brick front since three quarters of a brick is still there – they just want it to look nice.
I own a house in Cullman that my son lives in, and homeowners have never once inspected or asked for pictures, never asked for anything to be repaired or fixed. Same with a house in Huntsville that I bought as a foreclosure that was gutted, and I spent six years renovating before selling.
Our house in Equality is in a much better state than the other houses, yet this is not the first homeowners’ insurance company that has asked us to inspect and take pictures and then demand changes before they will cover it. The roof, the foundation and the electrical I can understand, but now it just seems nitpicking.
It makes me very frustrated because this house is solid; yes it needs painting because we took down the aluminum siding we didn’t like, but we are working on that. Yes, we would love to rebuild the chimneys to a rock instead of brick, but the chimney they are picking on is not even on a working fireplace and technically can be torn down. Why pick on a house in Equality, but not care about a house in Cullman? It makes me wonder.
With spring right on the doorstep Coosa Fancy Organic Farm is open for their 2025 spring CSA. CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” This system offers customers the opportunity to support their local farms and producers via an initial buy-in price, which is then returned through weekly shares of fresh produce. This helps the farm by providing the initial capital needed for operation costs.
In the early Spring, members can expect plenty of nourishing fresh lettuces, leafy greens (such as arugula, their popular Asian greens mix and kale), harukei turnips, different varieties of radishes, carrots, and broccolini.
As the season continues, you can begin to expect to see foods such as their super popular sashimi cucumbers, cherry and heirloom tomatoes and more! Help support Coosa Fancy and enjoy 10 weeks of freshly harvested, organically grown seasonal produce! Spring 2025 Season begins April 5.
Coosa County Live’s last booked performer, Sydny Sikes, will be tonight, February 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. While it is not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for our “Potluck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. Coosa Live provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn, as well as some of the potluck offerings.
I depend upon my readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; leave a voice message or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
