Emogene Austin
Funeral service for Ms. Emogene Austin, 98, of Rockford, was Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Rockford Baptist Church. Dr. Jeffrey Fuller officiated. Burial followed in the Rockford City Cemetery.
Emogene Austin, a beacon of love and generosity, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2024, at the age of 98 in Goodwater. Born on December 24, 1925, in Equality, the oldest of five daughters, to Richard Loyall Austin Jr. and Maggie LaRue Harris Austin. Emogene’s life was a testament to her unwavering faith and her commitment to serving others.
Emogene was a cherished sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her sister, Mable Austin; her nieces, Betty (Martin) Stricklen and Leigh (Tim) Sprayberry; and her nephews, Richard (Carlita) Phillips, Don (Donna) Phillips, Gary (Angela) Phillips, Terry (Marcelyn) Price, and Wayne Price. Emogene was preceded in death by her father, Richard Loyall Austin Jr.; her mother, Maggie LaRue Austin; and her sisters, Louise Austin Price, Lorene Phillips, and Annie Lee Ward.
A proud graduate of Rockford High School, Emogene’s thirst for knowledge led her to Samford University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree. She furthered her education at Florida State University, obtaining a master’s degree in social work. Emogene dedicated 41 years of her life to the Alabama Department of Human Resources, touching countless lives through her work with the Coosa County Department of Human Resources, as a Probate Officer for the Juvenile Court in Etowah County, and as a Child Welfare Officer. She concluded her career as the Supervisor of the Office of Adoptions for the State Department of Pension and Security, retiring in 1988.
Emogene’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was an active and devoted member of the Baptist church, serving in various capacities throughout her life. After returning to Rockford, she founded the Joy Sunday School class at Rockford Baptist Church, where she lovingly taught for 35 years. Her spiritual leadership and guidance were sources of comfort and inspiration for many.
Beyond her professional and spiritual contributions, Emogene was known for her diverse interests and hobbies. She had a passion for reading, which allowed her to travel through the pages of books, exploring different worlds and ideas. Her hands were rarely idle, as she found joy in needlework, creating beautiful pieces that reflected her attention to detail and patience. Emogene was also an excellent cook, delighting family and friends with her culinary creations. Her flower garden was a testament to her nurturing spirit, with every bloom representing the care and dedication she put into everything she touched.
Emogene’s life was a reflection of the words that best describe her: faith-filled, loving, and generous. She had a remarkable ability to make those around her feel loved and valued, and her generosity knew no bounds. Her legacy of kindness and service will continue to live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Jeremy Ray Jackson
Jeremy Ray Jackson, age 49, of Goodwater, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024. Jeremy was born in Alexander City to Carolyn Jackson and Don Jackson.
Jeremy is survived by his son, Colton Jackson; his daughter, Abigail Parker; his father, Don Jackson; his sister, Donna Horn; his nieces, Kaylei Horn and Daylynn Goodwin; his nephew, Dawson Horn; and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Jeremy was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Jackson; and his grandparents, Robert and Rene Jackson and Theron and Opal Culver.
A visitation for Jeremy was held Monday, October 7, 2024, at Andrew’s Chapel, Hanover, followed by a memorial service. All services were officiated by Pastor Tommy Thornton and Pastor Tim Barnes.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jeremy’s memory may be made to St. Jude’s.
Jeremy is remembered as a fun, loving, sweet, and giving man. He made you laugh and would give you the shirt off his back. Jeremy had a heart of gold. He will always be remembered for his laughter and kindness to everyone.
