David A. Bass, Rockford Church of Christ
I would like to conclude this series on Family Relationships with some “suggestions” that will
make the home a happy place.
1) Put Christ and His church first in your life (Matthew 6:33).
2) Always practice the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12).
3) Learn to deal with anger in such a way that we are not guilty of sin (Ephesians 4:26).
4) Learn what true love is (I Corinthians 13:4-7).
5) Avoid undue criticism and faultfinding.
6) Avoid nagging (Proverbs 19:13b; 27:15; 21:9, 19).
7) Avoid flirting with others (Hebrews 13:4).
8) Spend time each day in Bible study (2 Timothy 2:15) and prayer. Pray for your home, your
family, your spouse, and your children.
9) Learn to cooperate and work together.
10) Learn to handle your finances carefully and not overspend your budget.
11) Learn to admit mistakes and to say, “I’m sorry.”
12) Never stop the courtship and romance. Husbands and wives need date nights (at least once a month, if possible). Mom and Dad need a night or weekend vacation several times a year. Leave the children with their grandparents or favorite aunt. Find time for children, but also private time for just mom and dad.
Someone has said that the home can either be “heaven on earth” or “hell on earth.” Our home is
what we make it. If Christ is the center of our home and each family member works together, the home
will be a happy place.
