In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
I am so glad the primary election cycle is over! But what a horrible turnout we had for the primary runoff! The primary election in March was bad enough, but the number of people who took the time and interest to show up to vote in the runoff was just outright pitiful.
No wonder this country is going to hell in a handbasket. Everyone wants to complain about what is wrong, but the majority of people are not even interested enough to voice an opinion.
Well, I do want to congratulate our new circuit clerk, Jamey Johnson. He and Matthew Reams ran a clean, gentlemanly race, and the results were remarkably close – we couldn’t really go wrong with either one of them!
Now we can move on to the general election to be held in November. There will be some Democratic challengers at the state and national level in that election so I hope both parties can get their voters to show up.
Even the media is saying this will be the most important presidential election we have ever had. It will determine whether we return to the rule of law, a closed border and a lowering of the cost of living OR do we continue how we are with police being defunded and not allowed to enforce the law, a border that allows millions of illegal immigrants to cross with no identification required and the cost of living causing both businesses and families to make very difficult decisions on priorities for how they spend their income.
If you are able to afford to go to the grocery store, gas station and shopping malls without worrying about the cost of goods – congratulations! You can vote anyway you want because you are not being affected by the economy or lack of income, or you are living off what the government thinks you are worth. And, if you are an American, you are not worth anything close to what an illegal immigrant is worth – that’s where the tax dollars go now. But, if you are struggling to make ends meet, having to decide if you buy food or medications or pay the rent, you REALLY need to put aside how you have voted in the past and think more about what type of country you want your children and grandchildren to grow up in. You’ve got plenty of time to do some research as to what variety of truths you believe.
We have had some great news for future growth being reported in Coosa County. Lots of news in the Flagg Mountain/Weogufka area with more land being designated as protected areas and increasing the hiking trails available for the people coming from all over the world to hike our Pinhoti National Recreational Trail. The state is adding some improvements and expansions that will bring more and more people into our area.
We have a new industry coming in with the help of Gov. Ivey so we are going to be needing some additional infrastructure, housing and support businesses like grocery stores, shopping, etc. We can’t wait until the last minute before starting to work towards the future like it seems has been the way things have operated in Coosa County in the past. We need to be preparing NOW.
All of these things happening may just keep some of our young people from leaving Coosa County to never return. Maybe there will be jobs available where they can actually make a good living and stay here where they have been raised.
It’s time for all of the communities in Coosa County to start working together for the good of the entire county. Being one of the “foreigners” here, I don’t know if the county has ever worked together or if there has always been feuds between the “us and them.” I’ve recently read that those of us who have moved into the county with no roots here should have no opinion or say in what goes on.
The only thing I can say is that for a long time it seems no new blood came in, and the once thriving towns in Coosa County are all but ghost towns now. Young people leave, businesses close down, houses sit empty, but the old timers of Coosa County don’t seem to care or be interested in seeing the area come back to life. Eventually it will all disappear – and the old timers can’t take it with them when they die, but will not leave anything worthwhile behind.
It’s sad that people who have never left Coosa County don’t want to listen to ideas or suggestions on how things operate in the areas they came from. Maybe they have seen other areas work hard and turn themselves around and grow. But that’s OK – lots of new people are finding the peace and quiet of Coosa County and may one day outnumber the old timers!
By the way, I hope people from all over the area will go to Mule Day in Weogufka tomorrow to enjoy good food, good times and good people!
Something to consider – and these are MY opinions. If you don’t like them, just ignore them and move on.
