Searching the Scriptures
David A. Bass, Rockford Church of Christ
The number ONE selling book around the world continues to be the Bible, yet it is probably one of the least read books in all of the world! The Bible is God’s Word, and it is the most remarkable book ever written. The Bible deserves our undivided attention because it tells of our origin (beginning), our purpose in life and our destiny.
The Bible is the ONLY book that gives the divine answer to man’s greatest question: “What must I do to be saved” and gives man hope of an eternal, paradise home in heaven. The Bible truly is an amazing book that could only come from God.
Even though the Bible is composed of sixty-six separate books, written by forty writers more than 1,600 years ago it is a book of total harmony. There is not one contradiction to be found within its pages because the Bible is inspired — “God breathed.” God directed the men who wrote the Bible through the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 2:9-13). David explained inspiration in this way, “The Spirit of Jehovah spoke by me, and his word was upon my tongue” (2 Sam. 23:2). The Bible says of itself, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Tim. 3:16,17). Paul commended the Thessalonians because they received his message as “the word of God” and not as the “word of men” (I Thess. 2:13).
The apostle Peter wrote, “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Pet. 1:21). Hear the words of the prophet Samuel, “The spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue” (2 Sam. 23:2). Jesus often referred to the Old Testament Scriptures as being inspired. For example, Jesus said, “For David himself said by the Holy Spirit,…” (Mk. 12:36). In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus said, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”
Even though the Bible is the “best seller” around the world, it does no good unless it is read and studied. Begin NOW to make time every day to study the Bible. Jesus said, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).
“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15).
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).
