Equality & Nixburg News

We are hoping the new garbage pickup for Coosa County will start this week. I had placed a call to ask 121 Disposal several questions, as I sought further information to relay for this column, and they were unable to answer those questions. So, I guess that we will all have to wait and see what happens.
Every third Friday of each month, the Equality Performing Arts Center (EPAC) features a Karaoke Night for all the singers in the area. On the fourth Friday, April 28, there will be a performance by Alesia Gilliland, the head of the Montgomery Area Musicians Association, singing with Andrew Gaskins of Montgomery playing guitar for her. All are free to the community, and all need your attendance to keep happening.
While not mandatory, you are encouraged to bring a dish of shareable food for a community “pot-luck,” and if you can afford to drop something into the donation jar for the music, it helps keep the lights on. The EPAC provides free coffee, iced tea, water, and fresh-popped popcorn.
Rodger’s Shrubbery has plants available in their greenhouse, so it is time to get your vegetable and flower gardens started. They also have hanging baskets, colorful flowers and both Boston and Kimberly ferns, as well as a couple of hibiscuses and some hostas. We have been moving shrubbery quite a bit lately, generally not in the greenhouse, but can pick it up for any customer who requests, same with ornamental trees.
“Shop local, shop small” is something I have always believed in as much as supporting my local volunteer fire department. Small businesses are an important part of our community, and we will lose them if we don’t use them.
Every week I mention the Equality Volunteer Fire Department for the very good reason that they are needed by our community. The EVFD is dependent upon community involvement just as much as the community depends on the EVFD.
Everyone is welcome to attend their first and third Monday training meetings, even if only to just watch the firefighters do their training. They also have their first Saturday fundraising events; please participate with the bake sale, rummage sale and lunch plates.
I have heard it said plenty of times “make plans, and God laughs.” I am experiencing it as our house renovations now include an inspection by a structural engineer to ensure that what is in place is sufficient to hold what we want to do, and it will last another 100 years.
We are starting to clear the back acres from invasive trees, and we intend to plant chestnuts and black cherry trees, and some wildflowers, because I like the look of a meadow growing under the mature trees that will be left in place.
Hopefully we will be able to finish all the work and renovations before I retire, but the way things keep falling behind my original plan and timing, we will see what God thinks of my plans.
The one thing that has been positive lately is finding better insurance rates. I found a local independent agent, known as an “Endorsed Local Provider” or ELP for short, on the web page for Dave Ramsey Solutions. Whit Mitchell of The Mitchell Agency was so nice and did all the work to find me the best coverage at the best price, and just about every policy he offered with known providers has saved me money. Should you need a better insurance rate, you can contact Whit Mitchell at either 334-279-6667 or www.tmaofal.com.
I depend upon you, the reader, to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; call or text 256-531-6460 or email coosacafe@gmail.com.
