Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
After a postponement because of weather, the Volunteer Day to help cleanup after the January 12 tornado will happen tomorrow, Saturday, February 18, beginning at 9 a.m.
As many volunteers as possible are needed to help our neighbors who suffered tornado damages. The work will consist mainly of picking up trash, debris, limbs, and looking for lost items, but anyone who would be willing to bring their chainsaw and do some cutting would also be appreciated.
Volunteers will meet at the Volunteer Command Center at Rehobeth Methodist Church, 664 County Road18 near Equality. Those who wish to sign up to help should call “211” and sign up over the phone.
The Equality Volunteer Fire department (EVFD) is dependent on community involvement just as much as the community depends on the EVFD. Everyone is welcome to attend their first and third Monday training meetings, even if only to just watch the firefighters do their training. The next meeting will be on Monday, February 20, at 6:30 p.m.
The next Equality Neighborhood Watch meeting is on Thursday, February 23, at 6:30 p.m. at the Equality Volunteer Fire Department Community Center (old Masonic Lodge) on Highway 9 in downtown Equality.
Please plan on attending if you can. Bring a dish if you like. It is a good time to meet with neighbors, fellowship and hear what is happening throughout our community.
The Equality Food Mart just had their new gas pumps installed, which should prove a convenience for all in the community.
Jenny’s General Store has new stock of both “Equality” and “Lake Martin” T-shirts for sale, and they’re looking at other potential new inventory to bring in. If you have any suggestions as to inventory that they should carry that would bring you in as a regular customer, they would appreciate an email with your input to CoosaCafe@gmail.com.
The house and business next to Jenny’s General has had a lot of interest with potential buyers, offers have been made, accepted, then offers retracted, with a winning offer finally accepted, and a closing date scheduled for March 10. The new owner is eager to meet her new neighbors and community members, and she will be at EPAC tonight for karaoke.
Karaoke Night at the EPAC is regularly scheduled for every third Friday of each month, which happens to be tonight, Friday, February 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. Karaoke will be set up so that anyone can sing along with the music and lyrics. This is family friendly and is free of charge to the community.
Anyone, regardless of age or skill level, can sign up to perform. But if singing is not for you, then you are still welcome to come and enjoy listening to other people sing their hearts out.
Live Performance Night at the EPAC is regularly scheduled for every fourth Friday of each month, which happens on next Friday, February 24. For this month, Scott Grant will sing and play guitar. Scott is a U.S. Navy veteran who has been a fixture on the Montgomery and River Region music scene for the past 10 years, performing solo acoustic shows, duos with his friend Sam Williams on the sax, or with either of his two bands “SABADAS” or “HAT TRICK.”
Scott has released two albums of original material, “Gemini” (2012) and “Simpatico” (2015), and his songs cover a wide range of sentiments and observations with the occasional bit of good humor. Some other artists’ material that he covers are Cole Porter, Merle Haggard, Jim Croce, Muddy Waters, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. …Did we mention that it is FREE?
While not mandatory, you are welcome to bring a dish of finger foods for each to share as a simple pot-luck community gathering. The EPAC will provide coffee, tea and water to drink.
I depend on all readers to share with me what is happening within your organizations, churches, neighborhoods, groups, or family to share in next week’s column. Please contact me; call or text 256-531-6460 or email at coosacafe@gmail.com.
