We are happy to report that after featuring the two stray dogs from Equality in last week’s “Pet Corner,” Mr. Chapman said that someone had contacted him about giving the dogs a home. We love to hear and be part of these local “happy tails” to get animals loving homes with families of their own.
This week we are featuring Gabby, a local girl who is also in need of a forever home. According to the Coosa County Animal Shelter, Leslie Hardy rescued Gabby from a gunshot wound. Gabby is spayed and up to date on shots, and she is heartworm negative. Her rescuer says that she is great with other dogs and children, and she needs a home where she can run and play.
Anyone interested in giving Gabby a home can contact the Coosa County Animal Shelter at 256-391-7192.
Speaking of our local animal shelter, Operations Manager Dennis Hill reported that there has been a great deal of work done in the last two weeks. While the shelter may not be able to be open by January 7 as originally planned, Hill said he is still hoping the shelter will be open sometime next month, and the signage by the building reflects the intention of opening in January.
Numerous volunteers have lent their time, skills, labor, and more to help get the shelter ready to open.
Over the past couple of weeks the roof has been completed with metal by the team of Adam Thornton, Lucky Thornton and Brian Castleberry. A privacy fence was also installed by Johnny White with help from Jim Gogan, and plumbing was installed by J.M. Cobb.
Windows were installed and shutters taken down by Gordon Gogan. The outside of the building was spray painted by Jesse Leonard.
On the weekend of December 9, the shelter was pleased to have three students from the Central Coosa school system volunteer to assist. Jade painted shutters, and Vince Grogan and Tanner Hill moved gravel and installed the donated outside kennels. T.J. Hill also helped with painting.
This past Friday and through the weekend, Hill said that Ronnie Joiner and Jesse Leonard began laying blocks for the inside kennels. He said with appreciation that Ronnie and Jenny Joiner are donating their labor and much material compliments of Twenty-Two & Crew Restaurant. He added that he hopes to be finished with the blocks just after Christmas so that the kennel fronts can then be installed by Roger Outdoors of Talladega.
Additionally, this past Saturday, December 17, the shelter had a painting session for inside the facility by numerous volunteers, including Dottie Barnhart, Janet and Gordon Gogan, Cam and Kim Hill, Lisa Fuller, Debbie Hill, and Central Coosa students Abby and Hannah Hyatt. Operations Manager Hill said that the inside of the building is “starting to look good.”
Volunteerism and donated labor are not the only donations the shelter has received recently. Hill said that last week they received bedding supplies and a donation from Joan Blocker, as well as an electric dryer and shelving from Christi Lindsay and Bill Allen.
Additionally, the shelter was pleasantly surprised to receive a generous $500 donation from Heritage South Credit Union of Sylacauga.
Hill said, “Thanks to all of the donors and volunteers who are making this shelter a reality. We will be opening for business in January, with the actual opening date depending on weather.”
The shelter’s current needs are for old clothes and similar items for bedding, a hair dryer, grooming supplies, and a small refrigerator.
After New Year’s, the shelter will then be in need of dry food donations. For more information, contact the shelter at 256-391-7192 or coosacountyanimalshelter41@gmail.com.
Keep your pets safe and warm this weekend and over the winter season. Merry Christmas to you and your furry friends, and happy New Year!
