The staff at Central Elementary selected Beverly Hay as the staff member of the month. Mrs. Hay is a 1991 graduate of Central High School Coosa County. Mrs. Hay has been a nurse for 26 years, 20 of which she has spent as a school nurse. This is her sixth year as school nurse at Central Elementary School. Mrs. Hay says, “I enjoy taking care of the students and staff at the school. Go Cougars!”
The staff at Central Elementary selected Mary Waters as the teacher of the month. Mrs. Waters has been in education for almost 30 years and has been teaching second grade at Central Elementary for a little more than two years. Mrs. Waters says, “This is a wonderful environment and a great place to work. Everyone has been very supportive and helpful from the beginning.”
Mrs. Waters’ goal for her students is to prepare each of them academically for the next step in their lives, but also instill in them a sense of self worth, community and personal responsibility. She wants each of her students to know how much she cares for them, but she also wants them to know she expects their best. Mrs. Waters says there are many rewarding aspects of teaching; such as getting to know students and being a part of their lives, watching them grow and mature, listening to them interact with each other, and laughing with them. For her, one of the most fulfilling things is when a student who struggles and really works hard “gets it.”
Waters stated, “Seeing their faces light up with pride truly touches my heart. That is one reason I do tutoring after school.”
She added, “It is an honor to receive such an award from fellow teachers and staff members.”
