Dear Editor,
Coosa County’s sheriff’s election is coming up once again. We are lucky to have two wonderful candidates running for the office this term.
Sheriff Michael Howell is the incumbent candidate. He’s been sheriff for the last four years, and I believe he’s done a great job. Sheriff Howell has accomplished a lot during his term. He’s a Republican and is, of course, backed by the establishment Republican Party in Coosa County.
I think he’s great. I would vote for Howell if he wasn’t running against Josh Jones.
Josh Jones, a former sheriff’s deputy in Coosa County, a native of Coosa County, raised here. Josh still lives in Coosa County and is currently a police officer in Sylacauga. He’s had decades of experience in law enforcement. Josh also has family in Coosa County, going back to before the Revolutionary War.
Josh is a member of the Kellyton Baptist Church. Josh is also my brother, and I’m very proud of everything he’s accomplished in his life.
It’s well known that Coosa County is a conservative county. Josh is a true conservative candidate. While he is running as an independent candidate, independent does not mean Democrat. Josh wanted to run as an independent because he wants to be the sheriff for everyone in Coosa County, Republicans and otherwise.
There’s nothing wrong with being a part of a well-established political party. It’s just not something my brother feels is necessary.
Josh believes that no matter who occupies the office of sheriff, the people of Coosa County need to trust and expect that the sheriff will apply the law to all people, regardless of their politics. Running as an independent voter is just a way to signal to others that he’ll do so.
Some people might think that it’s a waste of time or money to run for office. I’ve seen comments on social media indicating the same. But I believe – and I know Josh does, too – that being an American means that we deserve choices. And in Coosa County we are lucky enough to choose between the established incumbent candidate and an experienced, well-trained newcomer, Josh Jones. Josh is proudly making sure that the county has options, and it’s never a waste of time or money to serve the county.
Part of living in a country, where a man can make a great living as a business owner, means that Josh and I believe in a free, open market.
Having another candidate for office is just a way to let the free, open market choose what they want in a sheriff. That’s the way our republic is supposed to work.
Josh Jones is an incredible candidate, and even if he wasn’t my brother, I’d want his experience and professionalism in the office. He’s earned my vote. He wants to earn every vote he gets, including yours.
Regardless of who you want to vote for, I’ve made my decision to vote Josh Jones for sheriff this election cycle.
No matter what though, I want to thank Sheriff Howell and others in the community for being professional and courteous through this election. It’s just what Coosa County deserves.
Best regards,
Amanda Jones Mask
