Facilitator of the program, Jacques Mitchell, shared the following: This summer, Central High School was excited to offer rising students the opportunity to enhance their educational intellect through the continued partnership with The Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement (SAFE) Program. SAFE paid for all students’ enrollment! This opportunity encompassed an ACT Test Preparation class that helped students prepare for the exam and improve test scores. It covered all subjects of the exam including math, science, language, and reading. Our prep class helped students with test anxiety, timing and performance. Moreover, it will help make a difference in the choice of college and the cost of education for students.
Dr. Michelle Hayes, director of programs with College Admissions Made Possible (CAMP), provided the instruction. She has more than 20 years of experience as an educator and administrator. This enrichment was available to our upcoming sophomores, juniors and seniors. Central High School utilized the “Pay to Learn” model, which means that participants in the program with 100% attendance were paid at a rate of $10 per hour.
Dr. Hayes provided us with an analysis of our participants’ scores. Scores were calculated based on students taking a pre- and post-ACT diagnostic. One student improved by nine points, and several improved by three points or better. In regards to the participants’ performance, Dr. Hayes said, “Your students are to be commended for their tremendous growth! As the results reveal, overall scores increased by an average of 3.13 points. This is remarkable for a boot camp and noteworthy, to say the least. Please, share my sentiments of congratulations with those students and your administration. Their dedication and commitment to the process truly paid off. If they continue on this trajectory, they should receive scholarships and college admissions.”
