Pictured is first grade teacher Faceethia Ware working with Nehemiah Chapman and Jaxson Massengill on phonograms, which are letter sounds. Phonics is the focus of the Literacy Camp; students have been reviewing phonograms by segmenting and blending simple CVC words using a blending board.
Students also do a lot of word mapping to build words. For instance, if the teacher shows the students a picture of a cat, they would say or touch spell the sounds in the word, tap the sounds and then build the word C-A-T, SCAT, LIP, FLIP, etc.
Instruction has also been focused on a lot of hands-on and multi-sensory phonics activities. Mrs. Ware says, “I’m super proud of my students; they’ve been working hard.”
Elisha Burton shows off his desk pet he created using the engineering design process during STEM camp.
In the afternoon campers ride the bus to Poplar Point for activities. Pictured are campers learning about making healthy choices when choosing drinks, thanks to a Coosa County Extension Office representative.
