Farmers and producers wishing to participate in the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) will need to attend a two-hour training for eligibility to accept SFMNP benefits.
You have heard rumors of converting paper vouchers to plastic cards for seniors for years, and the paper vouchers are gone; SFMNP benefits are on the cards. It is recommended that farmers and producers get their grower’s permit before attending the training and bring it.
Coosa County and surrounding farmers/producers can get a permit at the Coosa County Extension Office, located at 13999 Ala. Highway 22, Rockford, 35136 (located beside the county courthouse). Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries (ADAI) must provide face-to-face explanations and training to farmers across Alabama to participate in the SFMNP.
The training schedule and protocol is listed as follows:
- Tuesday, March 15, 9 a.m. at Jefferson State Community College; 1850 Lay Dam Road (Performing Arts Center – Performance Hall Room); Clanton, 35045
- Wednesday, March 30, 10 a.m. at Department of Agriculture and Industries; 1445 Federal Drive; Montgomery, 36107
- Tuesday, April 5, 2 p.m. at Opelika Public Library; 110 Glenn Street; Opelika, 36801
Note: There is a possibility that the meeting may be canceled because of inclement weather. Check the website at www.fma.alabama.gov for up-to-date meeting information.
If a meeting is canceled because of Coronavirus or any issue beyond our control, we will not reschedule. If you do not attend another location, you must go online at www.fma.alabama.gov to complete the training and sign up.
Please refer to the CDC guidelines if you tested positive for Coronavirus or have been exposed to an individual who tested positive. Please be mindful of those around you to protect yourself and others.
ADAI will not require you to wear a mask at the meeting; however, if the facility location requires masks, then you must wear one.
