Ask Accordia: I was just diagnosed with diabetes. I am 44 years old and nervous about what this means for my life. Any advice on maintaining my health with his new diagnosis?
The American Diabetes Association says 1.5 million people are diagnosed with diabetes each year. So, you are not alone. First, it is important to know whether you were diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to answer your question better.
The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown. What is known is that your immune system — which usually fights harmful bacteria or viruses — attacks and destroys your insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This leaves you with little or no insulin. Instead of being transported into your cells, sugar builds up in your bloodstream.
Type 1 occurs at every age and in people of every race, shape and size. No matter how or when type 1 diabetes has shown up in your life, you can find success working with your healthcare provider to balance your medications and develop an exercise and nutrition plan.
Type 2 means that your body does not use insulin properly. And while some people can control their blood sugar levels with healthy eating and exercise, others may need medication or insulin to manage the disease. Being overweight is strongly linked to the development of type 2 diabetes.
As with any physical challenge, there is a heightened risk for mental health challenges. It is essential to take care of your mental health and physical health when living with diabetes. Accordia Health offers whole-person care to help and support you with both.
