Not eating for seven days makes one weak. For that matter, skipping a single meal is difficult for some.
Stomach growling occurs. The body desires nutrients to run properly.
What about the inner spiritual man? Is it receiving anything at all? Or is it consistently taking in junk for a sluggish existence? The old saying goes, “You are what you eat.” Furthermore, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. Garbage in, garbage out. The Word of God in, the Word of God out!
It’s up to us what we feast on – whether it be the good things of God, or carnal cravings and desires. It is an amazing reality that the God of the universe desires to commune with us. We should give Him the opportunity. It will strengthen us to carry on.
Jesus understood our need for consistent communication with God. He covered it in His prayer when He said, “Give us this day our daily bread.” He wasn’t praying for yesterday or tomorrow. It was the need for that specific day. One day at a time, sweet Jesus.
God has so much for us in the here and now. He’s also a God of today, meaning we can’t change our past, but He’s available to us at this moment. In one sense, God will meet our physical needs when we serve and trust Him. He will give us our daily bread.
Another aspect reveals God’s desire for a real relationship with His children. He alone possesses the spiritual meat we so desperately need for survival. It satisfies the soul! It is genuine, 100% soul food. It’s better than a Snickers bar, which they say satisfies, but is loaded down with sugar. C’mon now. We don’t want to sugar coat it. Jesus is the real thing (the way, the truth, the life), not Coca-Cola.
Job said, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.” After fasting 40 days and nights and being tempted by the enemy, Jesus stated, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
God wants to speak to us daily through His Word. We will be so much better if we simply pick it up and listen to how the eternal Word of God is shaping and molding our lives every single day. He wants to speak to us daily. He has things for us to do daily. Every day is important with God. We can’t afford to miss out on what He has for us. We’ll begin to weaken spiritually if we miss His still small voice.
In the Old Testament, God provided manna for the children of Israel. They were to collect their daily portion (twice the amount on one day). It was God’s sustenance for them in the wilderness. Many began to complain about missing the meat they used to eat. They craved their past food. Jesus said to the Jews in John 6, “I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.”
He is the living Word that is available to us today! We’ve got to dig in. Jesus has a table spread. Come and dine. You can feast on the Word of God at any time.
