Spirituality and Faith
Dr. Jeff Fuller
God is at work
There seems to be more trouble brewing around us than we really care to talk about. In a world such as the one who live in, when we read what James wrote it just does not seem possible:
“Consider it a great joy, my brothers, whenever you experience various trials…” James 1:2 (HCSB)
More neighbors, friends and family who have left this world through death than we wish to recount. There is so much pain, sorrow, bitterness, and hatred than we would to think on. Denominations are struggling through changes, churches are experiencing new ways of doing things in a post-pandemic world, and Christians are feeling the heat from a culture that does not want to hear from us.
Yet, in the midst of such a time as this, we must acknowledge the truth and submit to the truth: God is at work! Though we are certain to face hard-times, difficult times, and even persecution, we must realize these things will come into our lives as a part of the spiritual maturing process.
Therefore, we must see that God is at work!
Facing such things means we must do so with our anchor firmly holding to God’s safe shores. It means we are to have the attitudes and attributes of the first twelve verses of Matthew chapter five.
Jesus says to those gathered around Him along the seashore-and to us today-we are to be the light and salt in this world.
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men. “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16 (HCSB)
Salt preserves…light dispels darkness. We are called to be this type of element in the world. There needs to be preservation, there needs to be light shining in darkness.
Salt adds favor…light allows sight. We are called to a work to which we can only do under the leadership of the Holy Spirit living within us. Adding zest to situations and giving life to blinded eyes; this is needful in the time of trouble we live today.
As we do these things, we are being salt and light, not for our own vain glory, but for the glory of God. We are magnifying Him. We are becoming less so that He made be greater. Jesus said we are doing these things that “they may see your good works and give glory to your father.”
Until next time…
