During last month’s regularly scheduled meeting, the Board of Education approved a facility use agreement, as well as personnel and other matters.
Superintendent of Education David Stover Jr. recommended that the Board enter into a facility use agreement with the American Red Cross. The agreement would allow the Red Cross use of the Joe Belyeu Gymnasium as a post-disaster shelter.
The agenda stated that the reason for this was because it “benefits our students and their families.” It further read that “This also benefits the public, whose tax dollars have built school facilities.”
The Board unanimously approved the facility use agreement, with Board Member Jenny Kimbrell absent from the September meeting.
Regarding personnel matters, after having previously approved her hire at the August 27 meeting, the Board unanimously approved accepting a letter of resignation from Lydia Owens, Central High School paraprofessional, effective September 15.
Additionally, with a letter of recommendation from high school principal Brandi Lee, the Board unanimously approved Maressa Ware as a paraprofessional for the 2026-2027 school year, pending meeting the Alabama State Department of Education requirements for a paraprofessional.
The Board also unanimously approved Arvetta Strong and Derek Humphrey as substitute teachers/aides for the 2026-2027 school year, pending completion of requirements.
In other business, during the meeting Superintendent Stover presented the 2027 fiscal year Capital Plan for Coosa County Schools, which the Board went on to unanimously approve.
Also during last month’s meeting, Stover recommended that Coosa County Schools enter a “No Cost Extension,” which was approved by Cory Jackson, U.S. Department of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education Innovative Approaches to Literacy program officer.
It was stated that this would extend the Coosa County School District’s Literacy and Family Engagement Project, with the project timeline being October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.
During discussion it was mentioned that the grant ends this year and will not continue for the next five years, so the Board will continue it this year.
Following discussion, the Board unanimously approved the “No Cost Extension” for the Literacy and Family Engagement Project.
Following last month’s meeting, the Board held a called meeting on October 2.
During that meeting, the Board, with Board Member Sharon Coffman absent, unanimously approved a contract with Michelle Baynes to provide occupational therapy services to students selected by the school system, effective September 1, 2026, and ending on or before September 30, 2027.
The Board also reviewed two bids received for softball improvements and unanimously approved a low bid from Hurst Construction LLC. in the amount of $166,851. It was noted that the total consists of the base bid and alternate number two for the batting cage and backstop.
Funds for these improvements will come from the Capital Money budget.
Also during the called meeting the Board unanimously accepted a letter of intent to retire from Megan Thompson Masters, Literacy Everywhere grant director, effective October 1.
The Board met last Thursday for its regular monthly meeting. Following that, the next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Coosa County Board of Education will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, November 19.
