During its August 27 meeting, the Board of Education primarily took action on personnel- and coaching-related matters on the agenda.
With Board members Sharon Coffman and Jenny Kimbrell absent, the Board unanimously approved a resignation, recommendations, a voluntary transfer, coaching supplements, coach recommendations, and more.
The Board approved accepting a letter of resignation from Payton Fielding, Central Elementary School paraprofessional, effective July 31.
Regarding non-certified recommendations, the Board approved hiring Lydia Owens as a paraprofessional, with a letter of recommendation from Central High School principal Brandi Lee, for the 2026-2027 school year, pending meeting Alabama State Department of Education requirements for a paraprofessional; and Jennifer Trussell as a special education bus aide, with a letter of recommendation from Special Education Coordinator Wanda Young, for the 2026-2027 school year.
The Board also approved Quinn Gilbert as a volunteer for the band at Central High School for the 2026-2027 school year, pending a background check. As a volunteer, Gilbert will not be paid by the Board.
In other personnel matters, the Board also approved a voluntary transfer of Hannah Jensen from a part-time paraprofessional and bus aide to a full-time paraprofessional position for the 2026-2027 school year.
Regarding coaching supplements, with letters from CHS principal Lee, the Board approved increased stipends for the junior high coach supplement and the junior varsity basketball assistant coach supplement, each from $1,245 to $1,760, for Zykeivous Walker. The football program will be responsible for payment of the former, and the basketball program will be responsible for payment of the latter.
In a related agenda item, with a letter from Lee, the Board also approved the recommendation of Walker being paid the supplement as the junior varsity assistant coach for the basketball team for the 2026-2027 season, with the basketball program being responsible for the payment.
Regarding a coach recommendation, the Board unanimously approved Morris Phillips for a junior high coach position for Central High School for the 2026-2027 season.
Superintendent of Education David Stover Jr. also recommended approval of a contract with Amy Davis to assist with year-end procedures for the 2026 fiscal year financials by allowing up to 15 days at her current daily rate, which was unanimously approved.
Stover also recommended approval of a new service agreement with Brittany Yeargan; BCBA, LBA; which was unanimously approved. The agreement will allow the contractor to provide behavior-analytic consultation and support based upon the needs of the district, effective October 1, and ending on or before May 26, 2027.
Board members also unanimously approved and adopted a Hyundai resolution, regarding a vehicle used for diagnostics at the Coosa County Career Tech Center.
The resolution reads, “Whereas, Hyundai Motor America, a California Corporation, has graciously provided the Coosa County Board of Education with a vehicle and automotive tools to promote the education of the students of Coosa County; and whereas, the Coosa County Board of Education is grateful for its partnership with Hyundai; now, therefore, be it resolved the Coosa County Board of Education expresses its gratitude to Hyundai Motor America, a California Corporation, and approves and ratifies all actions taken by the superintendent and any other employee of the Board of Education facilitating the Board’s partnership with Hyundai and accepting all conditions, if any, Hyundai has requested or will request in conjunction with this partnership.”
In other business, the Board unanimously approved:
- A 2026-2027 salary schedule correction for the 12-month technology support position.
- A cost adjustment for bus drivers taking their buses home daily between routes, with updated paperwork specifying the monthly deduction of $15 per month per bus to be deducted over 12 months.
- A revision of the Coosa County Schools Charged Meals Policy.
- The renewal of ATBE General Liability/Errors and Omissions Liability Coverage of $346, effective October 1, 2026, to October 1, 2027.
- The ATBE Automobile Fund Agreement to participate for the purpose of self-insuring selected automobile liability and selected automobile physical damage exposures through participation in the Alabama Trust for Boards of Education Automobile Fund.
The Board of Education held its first budget hearing for the fiscal year ending September 30 with a called meeting held September 3, and the Board held the second budget hearing with a called meeting yesterday afternoon.
Following those two called meetings and budget hearings, the next regularly scheduled monthly meeting of the Board of Education will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, September 24.
