Special to the News
The Pride of Coosa County band recently held a performance for family and friends followed by their opening season parent meeting.
The band is looking and sounding sharp. The theme for this year’s half-time show is 80s and 90s rock. Musical selections include “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “We Will Rock You,” “Living on a Prayer,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another one Bites the Dust,” and a percussion feature which includes “Crazy Train.”
Besides performing during half-time and in the stands, the Pride of Coosa County band will also be heading to competitions September 26 and October 23. Thank you to band director Daryl Ingram for sharing information.
The Cougars dance team attended its first Universal Dance Association camp. In just three days, the girls worked with Universal Dance Association (UDA) staffer Olivia Reeves to learn four different numbers – jazz, hip hop, pom, and a kick routine.
Every member of the dance team was nominated for the All-American award with tenth grader Lillie Kimbrell receiving the All-American award.
The girls added an element of whimsy to camp by dressing up. Day one was Hawaiian gear to say “aloha” to dance camp, and for day two the girls dressed up as their favorite Disney princesses.
In addition to the hard work and long days, the girls and their parents supported them at the McSpirit night to help raise funds to offset the cost of their uniforms. Thank you to the director of the Cougars dance team, Melody Rathel, for sharing pictures and information.
Cougar football held an intersquad offense versus defense scrimmage game this week where the high school student body, as well as upper grade elementary students, were invited to attend. Both teams were looking stronger and more aggressive than last season.
Head coach Daniel Flowers said this year’s offense will be a little different than last year’s offense, with the addition of the new offensive coordinator Coach Richard Bell. Flowers said Bell brings more of a college approach to attacking down field.
In addition, the Cougars will use multiple formations and offensive sets. The growth of Waylon Chapman, now a sophomore, will allow the offense to do more because he has grown tremendously and is better able to read the field.
The offense will also be more dynamic with young wide receivers Jaquez Parker and Keyshauwn Willingham. Yet, seniors Javon Thomas and Zcai Lauderdale will be the focus this year because their experience allows them to know what to expect week in and week out.
The defense will remain the same as last year with Coach Jovin Hunter returning for his second season as defensive coordinator. Joining Coach Hunter will be Coach “Z” Walker, former Auburn University defensive lineman for the past four years.
The defense will focus on putting pressure on the quarterback and the offensive line this year while continuing to utilize the 4-2-5 defensive strategy.
Key starters on defense this year will be seniors Kenyon Richerson, Zavion Abston and JaQualen Kelley, and eleventh grader Wyatt Kimbrell. With this strong group of key defenders returning this season, the Cougars will look much more confident and stronger than last season.
