Just before Jesus came to Gethsemane, He declared an astounding prophecy to His disciples.
He simply told them, “But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.” (Matthew 26:32)
Delving into those words reveals that Jesus already knew what He would do after He died and rose again victorious over death, Hell and the grave.
He told that to them in real time while in human flesh and listed a specific activity that would occur after He was resurrected from the dead.
It was a prophecy that spanned around a week or so in time, but it required Jesus to enter and exit realms in a new, exciting and holy way.
But He specifically told them before His death that He would go before them into Galilee after He was risen again.
A lot occurred between the time He spoke the prophecy and later fulfilled it.
It differed from some of the other prophecies and amazing things that Jesus said to His disciples that occurred while He was still with them.
For instance, Jesus told Peter a few verses later in Matthew 26:34 that, “Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.”
Peter’s response was: “Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee.”
Which one do you think was right? God in the flesh, or a mere mortal human being?
As God, Jesus is sovereign and knows all things! If He tells you you’re going to do something, like He did to Peter, you can take it to the bank, so to speak, that it will happen just like He said.
Jesus had earlier told Peter and some others to watch with Him while He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus later found Peter and the others asleep.
Jesus asked Peter, “What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 40,41)
Later, in the heat of the moment, Peter’s fleshly response was to deny that he knew Jesus – just like Jesus said it would be.
In another prophetical account, Jesus told Peter to go fishing after they asked Peter if his Master paid taxes.
Jesus told Peter: “Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: take that, and give unto them for me and thee.” (Matthew 17:27)
Wow! How did Jesus know all of that? It is because He knows all things. He is sovereign, omnipotent.
Those two prophecies regarding Peter were fulfilled when Jesus was with them. The one about going before them into Galilee was different in that He spoke it while alive with them, suffered everything written of Him during His passion and on the cross, died physically, gained the keys of hell and death, and was resurrected from the dead three days later.
Then came the event He spoke of before His death. After He defeated death and returned to the Earth, “Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” (Matthew 28:10,17,18)
