On April 18, at approximately 1 a.m., the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC) successfully disrupted a coordinated contraband smuggling attempt at Fountain Correctional Facility through a multi-layered, intelligence-driven interdiction effort.
A trespasser at Fountain Correctional Facility triggered a coordinated response involving facility
staff, specialized units and external law enforcement partners.
The trespasser was tracked and apprehended by ADOC K-9. Simultaneously, the Atmore Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a related vehicle, resulting in the arrests of two suspects and the recovery of two firearms.
During the operation, a package containing contraband was located outside the facility perimeter.
In addition, correctional staff confiscated another contraband package from an inmate during a
security check.
Recovered contraband includes: Approximately 750 grams of marijuana, 15 cell phones and one knife.
In total, three suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Escambia County Detention
Facility.
DeJa Johnson was charged with attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, prohibited activities, first- and second-degree promoting prison contraband, first-degree possession of marijuana, certain person forbidden to possess firearm, and chemical endangerment.
Savion Gilchrist was charged with attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, prohibited activities, first- and second-degree promoting prison contraband, first-degree possession of marijuana, and certain person forbidden to possess firearm.
The third suspect is a juvenile and will not be identified.
Inmate Justin Hoyle is also facing criminal charges in addition to administrative disciplinary action.
ADOC extends its appreciation to all staff involved, including K-9, narcotic, intelligence, and LESD
agents; correctional officers; and partnering agencies.
The coordination and professionalism demonstrated in this operation reflect the department’s commitment to safety and accountability.
ADOC Commissioner John Q. Hamm stated, “This operation is the result of strong teamwork and a
proactive approach taken to ensure the security of ADOC facilities. I want to thank every staff
member and agency involved for their swift and coordinated response. ADOC has zero tolerance
for contraband or those who attempt to introduce it into any of our facilities. We will continue to
identify, disrupt and hold accountable anyone involved in these criminal activities.”
