Two of Coosa County’s students were chosen to serve as pages with the Alabama House of Representatives for Rep. Ben Robbins during this legislative session.
Eighth grader Lily Howell served as a House page for a week last month. Pages, who are 10-18 years old, assist members of the Legislature during the session by performing errands on the floor.
Those errands typically include obtaining copies of bills, votes, resolutions, amendments, substitutes, and other official documents, as well as delivering messages to members.
In addition to being afforded the ability to play an active role in the legislative process, service in the Legislative Page Program also allows the student to meet other young men and women from around the state.
“Serving as a House page for Rep. Ben Robbins during the Alabama State House legislative session, I had the valuable opportunity to witness the legislative process firsthand,” Lily Howell said. “My duties allowed me to assist House members and support the daily operations of the chamber while learning how state government functions. This experience strengthened my understanding of civic responsibility and inspired my interest in leadership and public service.”
Each member of the House of Representatives is entitled to one page for two weeks or two pages for one week. However, if a special session is called, each member is only allowed one page.
Rep. Robbins elected to have two pages for one week each, both from Coosa County. Kaden Tindall has served as a page for Robbins this week.
“Lily and Kaden were great assets to the Legislature,” Robbins said. “It was a pleasure to meet them. Both of them have great futures.”
Read about Kaden’s experience serving with the Legislative Page Program in an upcoming edition.
