Special to the News
In 1960, the Coosa County Soil Conservation District was established to provide conservation information and education activities to citizens and landowners of Coosa County.
These services would not be possible without coordination with many partner agencies over our 65-year history. In recognition of these partnerships, we invite you to join us on Thursday, October 9, between 1 and 3 p.m. at the Rockford Event Center for “Conservation in Coosa County.” Representatives will be available to provide information on programs and technical assistance that are available to Coosa County landowners related to agriculture, wildlife and conservation. This is an informal event so attendees can speak individually with the agencies of their choice, and attendees can come and go as they please through the duration of the event.
The following agencies/organizations are expected to participate:
Alabama Agricultural and Conservation Development Commission – Enacted by the Alabama Legislature in 1986, the Alabama Agricultural and Conservation Development Commission (AACDC) is a state entity that administers the Alabama Conservation Incentive Program (CIP). CIP offers more than 35 conservation practices to promote agricultural sustainability and natural resource conservation on private lands. CIP helps landowners offset the cost of installing conservation practices by providing a 75 percent rebate on installation costs.
Alabama Forestry Commission – Provides information to our state’s forest landowners, school children, government officials, volunteer fire departments, and the public. Agency personnel work with other organizations to conduct workshops, forestry tours and educational programs that demonstrate the importance of Alabama’s forests.
Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries – The mission of the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries is to manage, protect, conserve, and enhance the wildlife and aquatic resources of Alabama for the sustainable benefit of the people of Alabama.
Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) – A nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting conservation education and sound habitat management throughout Alabama. Through its Land Stewardship Assistance Program, AWF works directly with private landowners to encourage responsible stewardship of the state’s wildlife and natural resources. The program provides on-the-ground assistance and practical management guidance to help landowners enhance habitats and support healthy wildlife populations.
Coosa County Conservation District – Serving Coosa County residents since 1960, the Coosa County Soil and Water Conservation District can provide education and information in the use, conservation and development of natural resources in the county.
Coosa County Extension Services – The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is the primary outreach and engagement organization for the land-grant mission of Alabama A&M University and Auburn University in cooperation with Tuskegee University. Alabama Extension takes the university to the people. As educators, we are partners in every county, bringing practical ways to better our homes, farms, people, and communities. Our research extends knowledge and improves lives.
Coosa Valley RC&D Council – A 501(c)(3) non-profit working to enhance the environment and quality of life and foster economic and community growth within Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Etowah, Randolph, St. Clair, Talladega, and Tallapoosa counties.
MTM Environmental LLC – Partners with private landowners to support healthy, productive lands. Our services include habitat assessments, wildlife and botanical surveys, nuisance wildlife control, bat house installation, and humane bat exclusions, among other services. We bring certified expertise and practical solutions to help you enhance, protect and enjoy your property’s natural resources.
Quail Forever – Mission is to conserve quail and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education, and conservation advocacy. Quail Forever has staff across Alabama ready to assist landowners with management plans, technical assistance and enrolling in NRCS cost-share programs.
USDA Farm Service Agency – Serves Coosa County farmers and land owners and is located in Wetumpka. The agency provides programs designed to strengthen and sustain Alabama’s agricultural community by providing resources and assistance.
USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service – Our natural resource conservation programs help people reduce soil erosion, enhance water supplies, improve water quality, increase wildlife habitat, and reduce damage caused by floods and other natural disasters.
Mobile STEM Unit – In addition, the Mobile STEM Lab from Auburn has been invited to participate at the event. This unit introduces real-world, hands-on learning experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to students. The lab’s goal is to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators to solve the global challenges of today and tomorrow.
