The Literacy Everywhere grant director Meg Masters and the Coosa County Career Tech Center (CCCTC) educators invited eighth grade parents and students to a dinner meeting to learn more about how the CCCTC Career Tech Education (CTE) programs can help students meet graduation requirements, as well as prepare students for the workforce.
The topics presented included the importance of moving from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” the difference between credentials and certifications, College and Career Readiness (CCR) indicators as a graduation requirement, and an overview of each of the CTE pathways offered to students at Central High School.
Coosa County Career Coach Karen Hayes explained the interest inventory results and encouraged parents to ask questions and have discussions with their children to help them explore careers in their area of interest.
Special thanks to Literacy Everywhere-Coosa County Schools for partnering with the CCCTC for this event. Mrs. Masters helped students and parents in attendance understand that literacy skills will be everywhere as students enter college and the workforce.
In addition, in order to meet the demands of any career, you have to know how to read with comprehension in order to learn new trends, techniques and information that are important to your job.
Thank you to CCCTC instructors Jarrod Washington and Lisa Worley for sharing information about their programs with students and parents and CCCTC director Hester Hamby for sharing information on the health sciences, business information technology and agriculture programs, as well as for providing information and pictures on the event.
The Literacy Everywhere grant also provided dinner and some great fall-themed door prizes for our students and parents.
