Did you know that the Coosa County 4-H club offers a range of engaging in-school and after-school programming, along with a variety of camps and competition events for youth and teens?
Established first in 1902 as an agricultural youth club in Ohio, Alabama 4-H is the largest youth development program that hosts more than 118,000 youth annually. 4-H is nationwide and present in all 67 counties within the state of Alabama, including here in Coosa County!
At its core, 4-H is a dynamic organization that provides a unique opportunity for its members. Cloverbuds includes youth from ages 5-8 years old, allowing our youngest youth to engage in noncompetitive, and cooperative, hands-on learning experiences.
As they grow, so does the opportunity within the 4-H organization for youth 9-19 years old. Older members engage in competitive and non-competitive programs based in areas of STEM, agriculture,
health and wellness, leadership skills development, and community-based civic engagement.
The unique aspect of 4-H is that older youth can remain as active participants in mentoring youth, hosting local events and programs and even working at the state-level 4-H positions through the
Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
In rural Coosa County, 4-H expands educational and life skills development opportunities for our youth, providing local members year-round events, programs and camps that promote team-work,
community collaborations, and citizenship.
The Coosa County Extension Office is hosting a county 4-H membership drive during the month of September. Registration is for all students in public and home-schools aged 5-17 years old.
Parents are welcomed to stop by the Extension office Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to sign up for 4-H membership online.
Parents are also welcomed to sign-up for 4-H membership at local membership events:
- Friday, September 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the Rockford Town Hall office.
- Friday, September 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Goodwater Youth Development Center.
Parents are encouraged to speak with staff about upcoming Coosa 4-H programs and camps, as well as other Extension programs and services.
We need parent volunteers to help with 4-H regional competition events, summer camp and local after-school programming. If you are interested in becoming a Coosa 4-H volunteer, please contact Shannon at the Extension office at 256-377-4713.
The Extension Office would like to thank Rockford Mayor Scott White, Lesle Nelson and Sharonna Hayes for your continued support and commitment to improving the lives of Coosa residents.
If you would like to know more about local Extension programs and services, or if you have a need within your community, please reach out to our office. Contact Shannon at 256-377-4713.
