Special to the News
The Central High School Special Education (SPED) Life Skills class is now incorporating lessons in job skills.
With a grant provided by the Alabama State Department of Special Education Services, the SPED department has purchased a Cricut Venture, auto press, mug press, and other tools. These machines will provide opportunities for the students to learn skills they can utilize to acquire a job and ultimately provide them with independence after graduating high school.
Besides students learning how to use the machines, they are also developing soft skills such as how to inventory stock, keep records, take orders, as well as make and process those orders. Students have an opportunity to be creative by designing and collaborating with each other about their ideas.
Students also build confidence as they see their ideas come to life in the products they create. We are very excited to provide our students with this new opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills that will benefit them after high school.
In the future, there are plans to make the products the students create available for sale on the online Cougar Pride Shop.
A special thank you to paraprofessional Valerie Smith who has been instrumental in organizing this new venture for our Life Skills class. Thank you, also, to paraprofessional Tabitha Hyatt for sharing pictures and information. These staff members truly have a passion for the students they serve.
