Equality & NIxburg News
Jennifer Williamson
So a dear friend of mine told me she met a new man and that he has potential. My response was no, flat out no! Great that he has potential, but if he has not fulfilled that potential yet don’t get involved.
Sorry to sound cold hearted, but I went through that with my son; she had potential but once with him never even tried to live to that potential.
I can only explain this with the story of when a man helped a moth escape its cocoon too easily, it emerged with underdeveloped wings, showing that struggles are necessary for strength and development. And getting involved with potential takes away that struggle, and they never grow, never get the strength and development they require to live up to their full potential.
Or like betrothal in days of old when the groom-to-be leaves his betrothed to prepare a place for her. He has to build not just the home, but his abilities, character, strength, not just to provide a place to live, but to be the husband he should be. She isn’t just waiting in daydreams; she also is building character and strength, growing in patience, building her hope chest for a future life with her husband.
Days of old, when there were courtships, betrothals and community working together. Young folks were doing chores and getting jobs to pay their way into adulthood. Sometimes now I feel like I was the only parent who had my kids do regular chores, same as I do with my grandson. Washing dishes, sweeping floors, dusting, pulling weeds, walking the fence line, repairing fences.
OK, so the grandson is about to turn 5. Yes, he washes the dishes with me and vacuums; he loves it. And he is being taught to ride the fence line. He loves his dirt bike and his ATV, so instead of just playing we added purpose. He can’t repair a fence yet, but he can ride the fence line and come to get me or Papa to repair it.
We are doing what we can to prepare him to be a strong young man who can join adulthood fulfilling his potential and be an active member of his community.
