The Weogufka Center was recently the recipient of a $5,000 grant check presented by Rep. Ben Robbins.
Robbins presented the check to Gay Adams with the organization, which hosts events and helps to maintain the old Weogufka school facility.
Adams said the funds will be used for the community theater in the auditorium. The organization plans to present plays involving kids of all ages, both young and young at heart, with the plays being primarily for entertainment, but also possibly adding more fundraising opportunities for the center.
Currently the Weogufka Center has only about 15 core volunteers ranging in age from 61 to 82. It is a rather large undertaking for the group to keep the electrical bill paid, grass cut, upkeep maintenance on the buildings and grounds, and pay other utilities such as water, garbage and gas.
“We do our best to use Facebook as free advertising, but sometimes we need to reach folks with flyers and signs about upcoming events,” Adams said. “It’s truly a work of heart. The volunteers spend countless hours at the facility and spend a lot of their own money to keep the place going, for example bringing the lawn mowers and paying for the gas to cut the grounds every two weeks.”
“Rep. Ben Robbins has been there several times and toured the facility,” she added. “He knows how hard we work and what a job it is to keep the center open for the community. We certainly appreciate his support and financial assistance!”
Adams and the Weogufka Center encourage people to stay tuned for future events, including the community theater programs.
