The Weogufka community and guests recently enjoyed the Muddy Water Bluegrass Festival Jammin’ and Campin’.
Held at the Weogufka Center June 12-14, the festival featured “jammin’” and live musical performances on stage each day. Featured bands for the recent event included Bluegrass Connection & Adam Purvis, Bluegrass Scarmble, Pine Mountain Bluegrass, David Cameron & Friends, Cowgirl Up Bluegrass, The McMeans Brothers, and Beyond Blessed.
Guests had the opportunity to enjoy meals of beans and cornbread, bluegrass scramble and concessions during the festival.
Gay Adams with the Weogufka Center shared some of the community’s history and how they decided on the name “Muddy Water” for the bluegrass festival.
“Weogufka was settled in 1836 by an immigration of 40 Cherokee Indian families who fled from Tennessee to escape the Trail of Tears,” she shared. “Upon arriving they settled along the creek running through the area. They called the creek and town ‘Weogufka,’ which translated means ‘Muddy Water.’”
Adams added that in recent history, before local churches were equipped with baptismal pools, hundreds of local residents were baptized in Weogufka Creek. Inspired by this, the group had “Baptized in Muddy Water” T-shirts made, and Adams said they decided to name the bluegrass festival “Muddy Water” because of the community’s history.
