Special to the News
The Central High School science teachers would like to thank the Lake Mitchell Home Owners and Boat Owners (HOBO) Association for funding three grants this year.
Jacques Mitchell’s grant, “Growing in the Garden Part 2,” allowed students to plant seeds, transplant plants, prepare the soil, and weed.
They learned the importance of deadheading plants to ensure a longer blooming season and the importance of using marigolds as a natural pesticide. They enjoyed using the new gardening tools, as well.
In addition, they enjoyed the fruits of their labor by wrapping some of their potted plants and giving them to their moms for Mother’s Day.
Alicia Thompson’s grant, “Inclining with Inclined Planes,” allowed students to study simple machines and friction. Mrs. Thompson will be able to use the inclined plane sets purchased with the grant with her students for multiple years.
Mary White’s grant, “Chemical Reactions Rodeo,” allowed the students to perform 12 different types of chemical reactions in the lab. They observed endothermic and exothermic reactions. They produced three different gases and performed various tests to prove the identity of the gas.
We are extremely grateful to the Lake Mitchell HOBO Association for continually investing in the education of our students.
Thank you, also, to Coosa County Schools science coach Shelley Wood for providing information and science teachers Jacques Mitchell and Mary White for providing pictures.
