A Rockford man was arrested on four charges last month, including resisting arrest, following a response to an emergency call.
Chief Deputy Scott Hammond reported that on April 11, Deputy Payton responded to a call of shots fired on County Road 59 in Rockford.
Upon his arrival, Payton saw a male walking and what appeared to be light from a cell phone. Payton then observed the same person in the woods beside the residence’s driveway with what appeared to be a handgun.
Payton identified the individual as a Mr. Powell and continued to issue commands for Powell to drop his weapon. This continued until Sgt. Rudd arrived on the scene, and after calming Powell down, they were able to secure the firearm which was found to be a Glock model 19 BB pistol.
While attempting to handcuff Powell, he began resisting. Eventually he was handcuffed and put in the back of the patrol car, where he was transported to the Coosa County Jail.
After he was dropped off at the jail, Deputy Payton was called back for another incident because Powell had knocked cameras off the cell walls.
Ultimately, on April 12, 37-year-old Justin Cole Powell of Rockford was arrested and charged with destruction of property by a prisoner, resisting arrest, failing to obey a police officer, and obstructing government operations.
His total bond for all four charges was set at $12,500. He was released on bond on April 23 to await trial.
