Remembering Dr. Willie Maxwell

Union Square News

Happy birthday to Union Square neighbor and friend, Thomas Taylor, today, February 28. He wanted to be a leap year baby, but his mother said, “Oh no, you are getting out of here.” (LOL)

Thomas is such a fun joking guy, and everyone knows that. He loves to tease me when I am down. It helps build me up. So I have to pay him back with a little joke to help his birthday be a happier one. Butch and I love him and Joyce and are wishing him the best birthday ever!

Today is the end of February 2025 and the last day we celebrate Black History Month. However, it’s not the last of history. One reason is Dr. Willie Lee Maxwell (deceased) was born on February 22, 1922, in Coosa County, and his legacy lives forever.

He served all over the country, a true soldier of God. He served in the Vietnam War, took care of people and animals. He had a great powerful story to tell when he returned back home. He had too many to share, and Butch and I were truly happy to hear some of his amazing stories visiting him at his home in Ray/Maxwell community one day.

The amazing one was that he became a big time awesome veterinarian while serving our country. Many people do not know all he did for this country and others. He won many medals in the war.

He had some bittersweet moments, days and nights, but never took away his beautiful smile and mind to be able to tell his story, a true man of God who kept his mind stayed on God.

Returning home, he was still on the battlefield working for God and His people. He served in the church like nothing had ever happened to him, with a praise in his heart and mouth.

Oh, we also had church in his home with his daughter Mammie’s sweet spirit making the anointment flow higher. There was a sweet spirit in the house and the air inside and out.

Butch cannot stop talking about Dr. Maxwell. He says every time he is working over near his home he can feel Dr. Maxwell’s spirit, and he stops and says “Thank you.” Butch said he never heard such great true stories before and never met a man like Dr. Maxwell, so knowledgeable and informative.

He helped Butch to become wiser, and also me. We wish he was still alive. Butch doesn’t like to visit much. However, he says if Dr. Maxwell was alive he would visit him often.

Happy birthday to Wendy Jones and all February babies.

Rockford Church of God honors Bro. Wayne Weeks, who has a birthday in February and went home to be with God some months ago. Our hearts are still trying to replace the pain. We thank God he has no more pain. We miss him so much.

Prayer list: Caroline, Charlie and the entire Taylor family; Madison Hill; Butch Hardman; and everyone under the weather.
