Ninth grade modern world history students chose an industrial revolution invention to recreate for a museum exhibit.
The model also included a museum label with the inventor, date and how the invention revolutionized industry.
As was often the case during the industrial revolution, students competed to create the best model with the reward being a chocolate bar. The projects were judged by seniors who completed the project themselves as ninth graders.
Winners in each class period were Kaden Barker and Olyver Hogan, who recreated Robert Fulton’s steamboat the Clermont with coal, gold and cotton as cargo; Grayson Kelly, who recreated John Kay’s flying shuttle which carried the yarn back and forth across the loom; and Chloe Jones, who recreated Edmond Cartwright’s power loom which sped up weaving with water power.
The judges were very impressed with how resourceful the students were in recreating the industrial revolution models since the students are not allowed to go to the store to buy resources.
Besides the resources provided in class they had to use their problem solving skills and think “outside of the box” and find things around the house to repurpose in building their models.
