Carrie L. Lawrence

Home-going Celebration for Mrs. Carrie L. Lawrence was held Thursday, April 18, 2024, at New Home Baptist Church in Rockford with Rev. Terrence Stamps officiating.

Mrs. Carrie Lawrence was born July 8, 1937, in Coosa County. She departed this life on April 11, 2024, at Coosa Valley Medical Center located in Sylacauga.

Mrs. Lawrence was a graduate of Coosa County Training School in Cottage Grove. She moved to Rochester, New York, and New York City, where she worked in various employments. She returned home attending Alabama State University in Montgomery, pursuing a degree in education. While at Alabama State University, she pledged to Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. She worked at J. D. Thompson High School as a secretary and substitute teacher. Mrs. Lawrence worked many years for the Coosa County Extension Service in Rockford. She was employed with the City of Montgomery and later was employed with the State of Alabama in the Department of Revenue and the Treasurer’s Office.

Mrs. Lawrence joined the First Baptist Church at an early age. She served faithfully with the Usher Board and Missionary Society Finance Committee. She participated with the Morning Star District Center, in various activities and committees, and also served as secretary of the J. D. Thompson Alumni for many years.

Mrs. Lawrence is preceded in death by her parents: Sgt. Jesse Brown and Mrs. Elizabeth Kelley Brown; two daughters: Donna Leonard and Kimberly Lawrence; a wonderful sister, Margaret Howard, and brother-in-law, Thomas Howard.

She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Carmen Leonard, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and two special friends, Deacon Paul and Sis. Ava Burton.
