In My Humble Opinion
Jodi McDade
How quickly things can change! Both for the better and for the worse.
Several topics are on my mind this week, and they all will roll into a neat ball by the end of the column. We are going to talk gas, formula, Supreme Court, education, immigration, and the election next week. So let’s jump in!
Last week I bought gas for $3.89 per gallon; this past Monday it was $4.19, and I hear it will go up more between now and Memorial Day!
All of a sudden there is not enough formula to feed our babies, but, somehow, deliveries of formula are arriving on the Mexican border to feed illegal immigrant children. Most of us in my age group did not have formula when we were babies, and we turned out alright.
The investigation powers in Washington have still not been able to locate the leaker in the Supreme Court even though I understand there are only a few people to choose from.
More and more parents are speaking out and either suing boards of education or being sued by boards of education over curriculum in their children’s classes. Maybe there is NOT a course called Critical Race Theory, but the topics are being brought in through math, literature and science classes. The same goes for gender studies.
Starting next Tuesday our border will become even more open when the Title 42 law will no longer require illegal immigrants to wait in Mexico and apply for entry. And, we have an election here in Alabama this coming Tuesday to choose the next governor of our state, as well as other constitutional officers.
I don’t know how the employed or unemployed are making it right now, but I know those of us on retirement/Social Security are struggling among gas, food and medicine. There is a simple answer to the cost of gas, food and all other supplies: reopen the Keystone Pipeline, open the oil and gas drilling in our country, and the cost of fuel will drop IMMEDIATELY just like it started to increase IMMEDIATELY when President Biden shut everything down. That’s it. Simple.
Why are people so against the “America First” platform? Why do they want US to suffer while we provide for people around the world and open our borders to illegal immigrants? Don’t OUR children deserve the best first? I support helping those in need, but our American citizens, veterans, children, and elderly should come FIRST. If there is anything left, share it.
Why is everyone in such an uproar over the possibility of Roe v. Wade being overturned at the federal level? Abortion should always have been a states’ rights issue, and that’s what will happen if the “leaked” decision is made. And, why, would anyone be in favor of after birth abortions? For God’s sake, find you some birth control and use it! Or, as my mama always said, “Keep your knees together!” And, find the leaker and make sure he/she (I’m sorry, I don’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings who doesn’t know what gender they are) is arrested and charged!
And, the primary election this coming Tuesday is not between Democratic and Republican. It is between moderate Democrats and socialist Democrats and between moderate Republicans and conservative Republicans. You can only vote on one ballot for either Democratic or Republican candidates. In November, you can choose between the two parties.
The choice of our next governor will determine if our state is protected from the overreach of the federal government in the form of mandates, taxes and educational curriculum. The choice for our next U.S. senator will help determine if a conservative or moderate goes to Washington to represent us and try to stop many of the left-leaning policies that are being promoted by the current administration. It’s a serious decision, and, if you really don’t know who to vote for, just don’t vote. Unfortunately we don’t have a choice of “None of the Above.”
And here in Coosa County we will be choosing all five positions on our County Commission. This is possibly the MOST important vote we are being asked to make. If you have read the recaps of the meetings in the paper and/or watched the recent Facebook recordings of the meetings, I hope you have gotten a clear indication of the effectiveness of our County Commission as a whole, and of each sitting commissioner individually.
Are you happy with the direction of our county? Are you happy with the “good old boy network” that has been in place for years? Do you usually vote for someone only because you are related to them or go to church with them or live next door to them? Well, how has that worked out for you?
This year, there are choices on both ballots (Democratic and Republican) so you have an opportunity to keep the status quo or make a change. Since the most important elected official is the one closest to the citizen, this is the most important vote you will make.
Think long and hard. Vote for the best qualified person. If you don’t know about the candidates, get on the phone this weekend and find out about them! Choose wisely.
